The Maharaja Triptych Series is a new body of work by Sean Rush, composed of three panels intended to be experienced as a unified piece. These works are never sold individually. While not a traditional edition, Rush intends to produce a limited number of sets-no more than eight. Once complete, no further sets will be created.
Each triptych shares the same Getty-licensed imagery but features unique variations in color and tone, offering distinct emotional interpretations. Collectors who are drawn to a particular composition but prefer a different palette may request a custom version. Rush is intentionally exploring how color influences emotional impact.
Influences: From Warhol to Sabyasachi
This series is informed by the techniques of Andy Warhol’s silk screens-photographic imagery hand-painted to blur the line between the sacred and the modern.
Through the use of materials such as rust, crystal, and unexpected textural contrasts, Rush injects vitality and interactivity into the work.
Framing is also integral to the series. Rush was inspired by Indian designer Sabyasachi’s New York showroom on Christopher Street, which he regards as one of the most powerful design installations he has encountered in two decades. Drawing from Sabyasachi’s revival of upholstered picture frames, Rush developed his own method: combining beaded fillets, upholstered fabric accents, and burled walnut edges. These bespoke frames are handcrafted by the artist himself, underscoring his belief that art exists not just on canvas, but in the context of its presentation and environment.
“An exotic and tranquil oasis. A gem.”
